About the talk

To meet the world’s increasing energy demands, while simultaneously addressing
challenges associated with global climate and environmental impact, many nations,
particularly those with large populations such as China and India, are actively engaged
in a major expansion of their nuclear energy installation. The degree to which nuclear
energy can address long-term world climate and energy needs will be dictated by the pace
and adequacy of technical and policy solutions for waste, safety, security and
nonproliferation issues. Demand for nuclear energy is also amplified in part by its
application to a broader range of energy services beyond electricity generation (e.g.
desalination, process heat, hydrogen production, transportation fuels). The safety
issues are strongly emphasized in the aftermath of the Fukushima accident.

The presentation will review the current situation in Japan, China, France and the U.S.
The partially closed fuel cycle developed in France will be analyzed. This talk will
also review several Small Modular Reactor (SMR) designs for early deployment, as well as
some more advanced designs. We expect that SMRs based on proven LWR technology will be
easier to license and found more acceptable by general public. Other reviewed concepts
could also become competitive and further research and development could allow these
SMRs to become part of the energy mix in the future. The ideal SMR concept must satisfy
requirements of sustainability, passive safety, proliferation resistance, simplicity of
construction and operation, and affordability. SMRs could be broadly used by smaller
utilities, by smaller countries with financial or infrastructural constrains, in
isolated regions or for distributed power needs, and for various other non-electrical
application (process heat, desalination, oil recovery for tar sands and oil shale,
district heating.

About the Speaker

Dr. Jasmina Vujic is Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California,
Berkeley. From 2005 to 2009 she was the Chair of the Department of Nuclear Engineering
and in 2009/2010 she was the Chair of the Nuclear Engineering Department Heads
Organization (NEDHO). In 2009, she established the Berkeley Nuclear Research Center
(http://bnrc.berkeley.edu/). In 2011, a consortium of seven universities and four
national laboratories (LANL, LLNL, SNL and LBNL), led by Professor Vujic, won a major
five-year $25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (NNSA) to establish the
Nuclear Science and Security Consortium Center at Berkeley that focuses on research and
education in nuclear security and non-proliferation (http://nssc.berkeley.edu/).
Professor Vujic directs both centers, the Berkeley Nuclear Research Center and the
Nuclear Science and Security Consortium.

Professor Vujic is an internationally recognized expert in the areas of nuclear reactor
physics, advanced transport methods development for nuclear reactor analysis and design,
radiation detection and measurements, non-proliferation, and engineering aspects of
medical imaging and cancer therapy. Professor Vujic is the author of three books, the
editor of 6 monographs and international conference proceedings, and the holder of one
U.S. patent. She authored close to 300 research publications. Under her mentorship, 24
students received the Ph.D. degrees and 22 received the M.S. degrees.

Dr. Vujic is a member of the American Nuclear Society (ANS), the American Health Physics
Society and IEEE. She has held various executive positions in several divisions of ANS,
including the Chairship of the ANS Mathematics and Computing Division. From 2008 to 2011
she was a member of the ANS Board of Directors. She was the Vice-Chair and the Chair of
NEDHO (the U.S. Nuclear Engineering Department Heads Organization). She was the Chair
for the 2007 ANS Mathematics and Computing Topical Conference and for the 2012 SORMA
West International conference. She has organized five Asia-Pacific Rim forums on various
topics related to nuclear technology, including non-proliferation and safeguards.
Professor Vujic has been a member of scientific advisory committees for several
universities and national laboratories, including LANL, LLNL, and ORNL.

Dr. Vujic has received many awards including: the Prytanean Faculty Award (1996) at
University of California, Berkeley, and the Argonne National Laboratory Exceptional
Performance Award (1991). Professor Vujic received her Ph.D. in 1989 in nuclear science
from University of Michigan. She worked at Argonne National Laboratory before joining
the faculty at the Department of Nuclear Engineering at University of California,
Berkeley, in 1992
