Co-Director, Berkeley Nuclear Research Center
David McCallen is serving as the co-director of the UC Berkeley Nuclear Research Center, a newly funded center that serves as a focal point to coordinate education and research activities between the UC Berkeley Department of Nuclear Engineering and three DOE national laboratories, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos and Berkeley Lab.
From September 8, 2009, Dr. David McCallen returned to LLNL and had accepted the position of Deputy Principal Associate Director (DPAD) for National Security, within the Global Security (GS) Principal Directorate. Dr. McCallen is responsible for providing expert technical and leadership guidance to the National Security Office (NSO) staff and for fostering the development and establishment of relationships, and coordination of efforts at other Department of Energy (DOE) Laboratories in the broad national security arena. As the NS DPAD, he provides technical and scientific leadership and expertise in the areas of Arms Control, Treaty Verification, and Nonproliferation and is responsible for the coordination and implementation of LLNL position papers and responses to the DOE and other government agencies, senior officials and members of the scientific and policy community for the Laboratory Director. Dr. McCallen is also serving as a member of the GS management team.
Originally from Truckee, McCallen is a native of Northern California. He earned a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering and Structural Mechanics from the University of California, Davis, and spent the last 20 years at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In his spare time, McCallen enjoys hiking in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
